The word hatha means willful or forceful. Hatha yoga refers to a set of physical exercises (known as asanas or postures), and breathing exercises designed to align your skin, muscles, and bones in order to achieve inner balance of muscular, cardiovascular, endocrine, nervous and respiratory system. Homeostasis is established and maintained. (physiological balance in the body).
Hatha is also translated as ha meaning "sun" and tha meaning "moon." This refers to the balance of masculine aspects - active, hot, sun - and feminine aspects - receptive, cool, moon- within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. In our physical bodies we develop a balance of strength and flexibility. We learn to balance our effort and relax in each pose, so the awareness is directed to the inside, to self- knowledge.
With all physical and mental health benefits, unlike stretching or fitness, yoga is more than just physical postures. Hatha Yoga is a powerful tool for self-transformation. Connecting the mind, body and breath, it helps us to direct our attention towards, cultivating the awareness on the present moment. The practice of yoga aims at overcoming the limitations of the body. It teaches that the goal of every individual's life is to take the inner journey to the soul. Yoga offers both the goal and the means to reach it.
